3D Spalding Basketball cake for Philip

This is the second attempt that I created a 3D ball cake. I am so glad that I have perfected the spherical shape in a design of a basketball.

Well, it is very obvious that this cake is dedicated to a man who loves basketball. And that is Philip, the boyfriend of Grace for a year.

the Spalding Cake

Prior to making the basketball cake, I have browsed and read a lot of blogs on the internet. Watched youtube videos. One thing that I truly understand is that the cake should be hardened in the fridge before it will be covered with fondant to make it sturdy.

When covering the ball with fondant, first you have to make sure that the bottom should be first covered while the other half with another set of fondant. This is to retain the perfect shape of the ball. I used black fondant to cut the lines of the ball. While the Spalding is molded using gum paste.

We attended the birthday of Philip on the 31st of December. When he saw the cake, he was very happy because it was actually the very first time in his life that he had a very nice cake. He said that while he was young he never had a cake on his birthday because it was expensive for her parents to buy.

I am glad Grace made an effort to make her boyfriend’s birthday a very special one. I just hope that this two will last a lifetime.

Here’s Philip and his cake that Grace posted on her facebook.
