Savoring Seafood Cuisine at Sai Seas Al Rafee Restaurant in Old Muscat

After a couple of hours wandering around the inviting white colonnades in Al Alam Palace, we’re famished and wanted to savor seafood dishes near Mutrah Souq. We head back to Corniche, and spotted a nice parking slot along the boulevard. Jesse flagged down the metered parking machine then we perused the buildings at the opposite side.

Most of cafes in Mutrah usually serve Turkish or Middle Eastern dishes such as shawarma (sandwich-like wrap of shaved lamb, goat, chicken, turkey, beef, or a mixture thereof), labneh honey (pizza-shape bread with yogurt (labneh), cheese, and honey on top), and falafel (spiced mashed chickpeas or other pulses formed into balls and deep-fried). It was just simply a matter of patience for us to find a good restaurant that caters seafood dishes in this area.

Until, we walk past a building where we see a signage of AL RAFEE RESTAURANT in flashy luminous lights of red, green, and pink colors. An Indian promo guy is standing at the hallway entrance, holding pieces of menu booklet, and hollering us to try the food serve at the café upstairs. As we are approaching, this guy is smiling and, as for me, it seems that he is decent and appears convincing. The menu is also quite tempting, so we walk inside and climb the stairs to the second floor.

Inside the café I am greatly amazed of how the interior looks differently from the outside. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxing.

There is a family section with wooden bolsters for privacy. We sit in cushioned chairs beside the glass window overlooking the boulevard.

An attentive waiter brings us cold water to quench our thirstiness. A relief indeed! Then, the waiter handed over the menu which we examine closely.

Then, the sizzling fish delight with a cup of biryani rice and chips. I love how the hisses sounds as it is placed on the table with the delicious smell of the fish in marinated sauce.

Part of our main course is the chicken vegetable noodles with shredded carrots, slices of Spanish onions, strips of scrambled egg, and garnished with onion leaves.

We matched the noodles with Butter Nan bread which is soft and tender.

My son’s favorite is the fried chicken with chips and embellished with fresh vegetables. But I am surprised of this 2rials worth chicken with only two pieces of meat! It is overly priced and mediocre compared to other restaurants. I am dissatisfied and unhappy.

But despite of the expensive and second-rated chicken, still, we have a lovely time. Our bill came to 13.400rials with 2 bowls of soup, 3 main course, 4 pieces of bread, and 1 large bowl of rice with 4 can of softdrinks.

Thank goodness we are loaded and refueled as I should say! And ready for the last itinerary of the night – the Muttrah Souq.
